UPDATE: Apple pulls iTether
Tether.com is pleased to announce that its award-winning app – which allows simple and affordable laptop connections through smartphones -- is now available for iPhones. It can be found under the name iTether in Apple’s App Store.
The developers behind Tether.com first released its product for BlackBerry in 2009 so users would no longer experience the frustration of being unable to find a WiFi hotspot when most needed. After a little more than two years, Tether.com now provides 500,000 BlackBerry and Android users with a dependable Internet connection for their laptops and desktops, using their existing smartphone data plans.
"We're excited to help iPhone users find a simple, affordable and effective way to use their laptops while traveling," says Tim Burke, CEO of Tether. "It’s impossible to ignore the popularity of iPhone among smartphone users, so it was only a matter of time before we released Tether for iPhone."
iTether allows users to connect their laptop or desktops to their iPhone to access a fast, reliable Internet connection anywhere they can get data coverage. Tether’s simple download process takes no more than five minutes. Users simply run Tether on their smartphone and their computer until a connection is made. The app solves the problem of paying costly monthly fees for an air card and the frustration of searching for WiFi hotspots while traveling.
Frequent travelers in particular love Tether because it works all over the world, no matter what network or carrier is available at the time. There’s no need to worry about reconfiguring the Internet connection from network to network.
“Tether.com has allowed me to travel anywhere, and not have to worry about WiFi hotspots,” said Nick, a long-time client. “I've gone as far as being at a friend’s place, and having my Mac act as a WiFi hotspot, so two of us could connect and browse at the same time.”
Tether is available as of today at Apple’s App at a 50% launch special, typically priced at a $30 one-time fee. It can be found under the name iTether. Unlike other solutions, iTether does not require you to jailbreak your iPhone.
